Who This Tool Is For
DBAs, backend leads, and FinOps partners budgeting PostgreSQL on RDS. Teams debating Multi-AZ, gp3 sizing, or io1 for latency-sensitive OLTP.
Why We Built This Tool
RDS bills split across instance hours, storage GB, and IOPS — Multi-AZ silently doubles compute. We built this from the same us-east-1 PostgreSQL rate card we use in database cost reviews.
What Problem It Solves
- HA cost delta. Single-AZ vs Multi-AZ side-by-side.
- Storage class toggle. gp3 vs io1 with IOPS inputs.
- Instance catalog. Common db.t3 / m6i / r6i shapes pre-loaded.
- Finance-ready totals. Monthly and annual in one click.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do these prices come from?
RDS PostgreSQL On-Demand us-east-1 instance and storage list prices as of June 2026. Multi-AZ modeled as 2× instance hourly; storage is not doubled in this simplified view.
Are backups included?
Automated backup storage up to DB size is free; backup storage beyond provisioned DB size bills at S3 rates — not modeled here.
gp3 IOPS baseline?
gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MB/s throughput by default; volumes ≥400 GB include 12,000 IOPS in AWS baseline offerings — confirm for your engine/version.
What about Aurora?
This tool targets RDS PostgreSQL provisioned instances. For Aurora ACU/I/O pricing use our RDS vs Aurora comparison and dedicated Aurora modeling.
Licensing?
PostgreSQL is open-source on RDS — no separate license line. Oracle/SQL Server licensing is different.
How accurate is this estimate?
Compute and storage arithmetic matches published rates for listed instances. Real bills add Performance Insights, Proxy, and data transfer.
