Who This Tool Is For

Platform engineers, SREs, and FinOps leads forecasting Amazon EKS before a migration or a cluster sprawl audit. If Cost Explorer shows climbing Amazon EKS and EC2-Other lines together, control plane hours plus worker nodes are usually both in play.

Why We Built This Tool

EKS bills split across a flat control plane hourly and whatever backs your pods — EC2 Auto Scaling groups or Fargate vCPU/GB. We built this from the us-east-1 rate card we use in Kubernetes cost reviews (pricing as of 2026-06-14).

What Problem It Solves

  • Control plane visibility. $0.10/cluster-hour × uptime is easy to forget in pod-level estimates.
  • Worker mode toggle. Compare EC2 node groups vs Fargate on the same inputs.
  • Multi-cluster math. Scale cluster count before finance approves another regional stack.
  • Budget defensibility. Monthly and annual totals for architecture and FinOps reviews.

Pair with cloud cost optimization, the Fargate calculator, or EC2 calculator for the full stack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these prices come from?

Amazon EKS control plane and representative EC2 worker On-Demand rates plus Fargate x86 compute for us-east-1 as of 2026-06-14. Confirm in the AWS Pricing Calculator before budgeting.

Is the data plane included?

Worker compute (EC2 or Fargate) is included from your inputs. EBS volumes, load balancers, NAT Gateway, and CloudWatch are separate — add those calculators for a full platform estimate.

How is Fargate on EKS billed?

Each running pod on Fargate bills vCPU-hours and GB-hours for the task size. This calculator multiplies average concurrent tasks × task size × hours — adjust task count for burstier workloads.

Does this include Extended Support?

No — clusters on Kubernetes versions in Extended Support pay an additional hourly control plane surcharge per AWS policy. Upgrade to a supported version to avoid it.

What about Spot or Savings Plans?

Rates shown are On-Demand list prices. Spot instances, Compute Savings Plans, and EC2 Instance Savings Plans can cut worker costs 40–70% after right-sizing.

How accurate is this estimate?

Arithmetic matches published us-east-1 rates for the inputs you provide. Real bills add CSI drivers, observability agents, cross-AZ traffic, and IP address charges.
