CloudHSM vs KMS Custom Key Store — when does each win?
KMS with AWS-managed keys suits most encryption needs. CloudHSM (via Custom Key Store) is required when regulations mandate single-tenant HSM custody or you need direct PKCS#11 access to keys.
What is the minimum cluster size?
AWS allows a single-HSM cluster for development. Production deployments typically run at least two HSMs in different Availability Zones for high availability.
Does key count affect cost?
No. CloudHSM hourly charges are flat per HSM regardless of how many keys or users you create on the appliance.
What happened to hsm1.medium?
hsm1.medium reached end of support in March 2026. New clusters should use hsm2m.medium ($1.60/hr vs legacy $1.88/hr).
Does this include upfront legacy charges?
No. This calculator models recurring HSM-hour charges only. Historical upfront CloudHSM SKUs are excluded.
