Who This Tool Is For

Platform engineers sizing shared file storage for HPC (Lustre), Windows lift-and-shift, or NetApp/OpenZFS migrations.

Why We Built This Tool

FSx bills storage, throughput, and IOPS on different meters per engine — AWS Pricing Calculator requires picking the right product first.

What Problem It Solves

  • Lustre throughput trap. Persistent Lustre includes baseline MB/s per TiB; provisioned extras bill separately.
  • Windows backup storage. SMB file shares bill backup GB independently from primary storage.
  • ONTAP SSD IOPS floor. 3 IOPS/GB included, but high-performance workloads need provisioned extras.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I choose FSx over EFS?

Choose EFS for general-purpose POSIX NFS shared files across Linux containers and Lambda. Choose FSx when you need Windows SMB (Windows File Server), Lustre throughput for HPC/ML, NetApp ONTAP features (snapshots, replication), or OpenZFS on Linux.

How does Lustre SSD vs HDD pricing compare?

Persistent HDD at $0.013/GB-month is ~11× cheaper than Persistent SSD at $0.145/GB-month. HDD suits capacity-heavy, sequential workloads; SSD suits latency-sensitive HPC and ML training pipelines.

What drives Windows File Server cost?

Windows FSx bills HDD storage ($0.025/GB-mo), provisioned throughput capacity ($4.50/MBps-mo), and optional backup storage ($0.05/GB-mo). Typical deduplication saves 50–60% on effective storage.

How does ONTAP capacity pool tiering work?

Active data stays on SSD ($0.125–0.25/GB-mo depending on AZ). Infrequently accessed data auto-tiers to capacity pool at $0.0438/GB-mo with per-request read/write charges on access.

Are backups included in FSx storage pricing?

No. Backup storage is billed separately at $0.05/GB-month for Windows, ONTAP, and OpenZFS. Backups are incremental — only changes since the last backup are stored.

Where do these FSx prices come from?

Rates are AWS published us-east-1 list prices (Amazon FSx pricing), pricing as of 2026-06-21.
