Who This Tool Is For

DBAs, migration leads, and platform teams evaluating DocumentDB as the AWS-native MongoDB-compatible target.

Why We Built This Tool

DocumentDB bills compute, storage, and I/O separately under Standard — I/O-heavy document workloads can exceed instance cost.

What Problem It Solves

  • I/O surprise. Write-heavy workloads generate I/O charges at $0.20/million under Standard storage.
  • No Savings Plans. Reserved Instances are the only commitment discount — unlike EC2 or Lambda.
  • Serverless minimum. 0.5 DCU floor runs continuously unless you pause the cluster.

See RDS consulting or the migration estimator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these DocumentDB prices come from?

Rates are AWS published us-east-1 list prices (Amazon DocumentDB pricing), pricing as of 2026-06-28.

Standard vs I/O-Optimized — when to switch?

Choose I/O-Optimized when I/O costs would exceed 25% of total cluster spend, or when you need predictable billing regardless of I/O volume. I/O-Optimized eliminates per-request I/O charges at higher instance and storage rates.

How does Serverless DCU pricing work?

Capacity is measured in DocumentDB Capacity Units (DCUs) billed per second. Standard Serverless is $0.0822/DCU-hour; I/O-Optimized Serverless is $0.0905/DCU-hour with no separate I/O charges.

Do Savings Plans apply to DocumentDB?

No. DocumentDB supports Reserved Instances only. Use the Reserved Instance break-even calculator for commitment planning.

Is backup storage free?

Backup storage up to 100% of your database storage in the region is included at no charge. Additional backup storage bills at $0.02/GB-month.

How does this compare to self-managed MongoDB on EC2?

DocumentDB trades operational overhead for higher per-GB storage and I/O meters. Compare instance costs in the EC2 and RDS calculators for a full TCO picture.
